Blog EntrySelf confidence tipsSep 8, '07 5:22 AM
for everyone
Everybody needs a confidence boost sometimes, so here are a few tips...

1) Feel Good when you Want

When you need to boost your self confidence or self esteem, find 3 things that make you feel good. These could be memories of good times, a piece of music, a holiday souvenir, or a person's face - use photos if it helps. Practise thinking about them and bringing them to mind.

Developing self confidence that lasts - because of the way emotions 'attach' themselves to memories, you will quickly train yourself to feel good when you want - a great help.

2) Beat Self Consciousness

Self consciousness is the No.1 enemy of self confidence. Learn how to keep your attention off yourself. You can do this easily by following these steps...

a) If you notice you have become self-conscious, (you can usually tell because you start to feel anxious), choose something 'everyday' you can see and study it in detail. For example: examine a door, look at the different textures and shades of colour, wonder about who made it and how and so on. The important thing is that you're learning how to keep your attention off yourself.

b) If you feel self-conscious in a social situation, it's usually because you don't have enough to do! Focus on what your purpose in the situation is. Whether you're there to:

  • find out if you like the other people in the situation
  • make others feel comfortable
  • find out some information
  • make business contacts
  • and so on...

It's easy to feel self-conscious if you have nothing to do, and much more difficult if your attention is occupied by a task.

Think how comfortable you have been with others when you're all working toward a common goal. The common goal of socialising could be making friends, it could be the exchange of mutually beneficial information, it could be whatever you want it to be!

3) Don't Take Undue Criticism - Even From Yourself !

Challenge your own assumptions. Here's a few to get you started:

a) Confident-looking people have bad moments too.

b) Just because you feel under-confident, doesn't mean other people can tell.

c) If you're saying things to yourself like "You're no good at anything" then rest assured, you're wrong. Everyone can compose a sentence, get successfully to the store, eat without choking. Don't let yourself make sweeping statements about yourself - in the long run it is this sort of thing that can really damage your self image.

Building self esteem is not just about thinking good of yourself, it's about not thinking bad for no reason!

d) Just because you have felt bad about yourself in the past doesn't mean you're always going to feel that way. I have seen hundreds of people surprise themselves once they have learned how to build self confidence in a way that it stays built!

e) Learn how to develop your self confidence by following the tips from this site and notice the small differences as they happen. Persevere and don't expect everything at once. Beating low self esteem is a wonderful thing, and it's much easier than you'd imagine.

Use your make up blusher cleverly to slim down chubby cheeks

  • Purchase two shades of blush, one of a deeper shade and one that's lighter. To ensure the shades go together, purchase a compact with two coordinating shades.
  • Apply your usual foundation make-up or powder to cover any imperfections and even out your skin tone.
  • Apply the lighter shade of blush in circular motions onto the apples of your cheeks... how do you to find your apples? Just smile!

Most hair stylists will tell you that a good starting point to a face slimming hair style is to give your hair a svelte look. How do you do that? Here are some hair tips that can work for minimizing fuller face shapes:

Don'ts

  • Just as clothes with horizontal strips add the elusion of weight, hairstyles with blunt edges can make your face look much wider than it really is. Avoid styles or cuts that have any type of strong lines that will make your face look larger than it really is.
  • Avoid hair that is either too long or too short.
  • Avoid big hair, lots of curls, wedge styles or super short cuts.
  • The Square and Pear shapes are also not suited for super short cuts that will highlight the jaw or the chin.

Make-up timeline

To ensure your eyes stay healthy and free of infection when using make-up, heed the following due-date rules. Throw out your mascara after three months, powder eye shadows every nine to 18 months, and cream eye shadows every six to 12 months. Sharpen your eyeliners often to keep them clean.

Mascara mistakes

To avoid mascara flake-off or smudging on your face, apply a thin cost of mascara to top lashes only. Then run an eyelash brush through lashes to prevent clumpy mascara build-up.

Get a rosy glow

Want your face to radiate a healthy glow? Try using a gel blush or cream (instead of powder) in a rosy shade of pink to create a more natural look. Gels or creams are more transparent and blend smoothly – rub it on the apples of your cheek and blend up towards the eye for a glowing complexion.

Minute manicure

Need a fast fix for unpolished nails? File nails into a square shape, buff them to create a bit of shine and apply a clear coat of polish. Next rub in cuticle oil around the edges of the nail and moisturize your whole hand. It takes less than 15 minutes and will give your appearance a polished look.

Your nails may be craving something - If your nails are weak, splitting, fragile etc, the problem could be traced back to an inadequate water intake.

Most people don't drink nearly enough water. Drink up!

What to do about brittle nails

The most common nail wreckers are harsh detergents and water, which can stress nail fibers. So be sure to put rubber gloves on while you clean or do dishes.

Also, avoid using perfume lotions that usually contain alcohol if your nails are brittle. It will only make your nails worse.

It may be possible that your calcium intake is low, as well.

How To Give Yourself A Manicure

  • Whether you prefer your nails to be long or short, they can still look stunning with a little know-how.
  • Wash and dry your hands.
  • Using a double-sided emery board, file nails using a gentle stroke. Avoid corners of your nails as this can weaken them.

Hair helper

Interested in trying out sculpting mud for your hair? Make sure you use a minimal amount of product to prevent weighing hair down. A good rule of thumb is to put a little bit on your fingertips and apply to the hair from the back of the head forward.

Hair clean-up

An all-natural way to eliminate shampoo build-up and toxins in your hair is with apple cider vinegar. Rinse your hair once a week with one cup of apple-cider vinegar, found in grocery stores or health stores.

Skin Care Tips

Money saver

Hooked on using disposable cleansing cloths or facial wipes for cleaning your face? Since these packages are convenient but costly, take the time to cut each cloth in half when you buy the package. With a little extra effort you gain twice as many cleansing cloths and save some money in the process.

Exfoliate, exfoliate

For a fast, at-home body exfoliation, mix olive oil with sea salt or sugar. Smooth over skin in circular motions all over the body, avoiding the breast area. Rinse off in the shower and apply your favourite moisturizer.

Body brush

Dry brushing your skin before a shower is a great way to stimulate the natural oil glands in your body. Using a natural bristle body brush, start at your feet and lightly “brush” your skin in a circular motion. Follow by a warm shower and slather your body with your favourite moisturizer.

Fashion tips for the style conscious wannabe. Use our fashion tips to find clothes tips, how to dress slim clothes tips find the right denim jeans style for your shape. Match your fashion sense to your style and personality and learn how to develop your own unique sense of style.

Dress Slim

Go monochrome

Monochromatic dressing (one colour from head to toe) makes anyone look taller and slimmer. Tone-on-tone colouring was a key trend on the runways for spring and is a style that makes anyone leaner.

Get a leggy look

Legs will look longer and slimmer if you always closely match your hose to your shoes and skirts. For a print skirt, use the background colour to find hose in a similar tone.

Hosiery tips

Two-tone shoes pose a dilemma when selecting hosiery. Always wear a neutral colour hose or match your hosiery to the lighter colour in the shoes. Never wear nylons that are darker than the lightest colour in the shoes.

Clothes Tips

Fresh scents

Scented waters, such as lavender water, are a great way to infuse a heavenly, yet subtle smell into your clothing. Add scented water to an iron, and on steam setting, gently waft over clothing. A great tip for clothes that have been in storage for the season.

Bra dilemma

Does the underwire in your bra always poke through after a few wearings? It could be the way you are storing them. Hanging bras on a hook in your closet prevents the underwire from getting twisted and pulled, as it would in a dresser drawer.

Perfect purchase

If you find a pair of black pants or a skirt that are the perfect fit, consider buying more than one pair. Black tends to fade after a while, but with two pairs of the same pants, the wear and tear takes longer. And black matches with everything!

Spot remover

Trying to remove a stain from your favourite suede jacket or skirt? Lightly rub over the stain with an emery board to get rid of the spot.

Static cling control

Need a quick way to fight static on your clothes? Carry a dryer sheet with you in your purse – rub it on the underside of your skirt or pantyhose to keep your clothes static free.

Fast fix for loose buttons

Losing the button off your jacket but don’t have time to sew it back on? Use a dab of clear nail polish to seal the threads onto the center of the button as a temporary solution.

Keep clothes fresh

Before you put your clothes away for the winter, insert a fabric softener sheet, lavender sachet or to keep them smelling fresh for next season.

Jeans Appeal

Denim is everywhere this season, from the hat on your head to the shoes on your feet, and yet finding the perfect pair of jeans still overwhelms us.

Choosing classic or trendy

If you live in your jeans, classic styles like relaxed fit transfer well from year to year. If you prefer a hipper look, the must-haves for women are anything super-low. What's great about them is that because they sit on your hips, they work for many different body types. If you’re a little on the shy side, try a pair of boy-cut jeans, which won’t reveal as much of your mid-section.

Feeling the stretch

Another trend this season is the body-hugging jean, emphasizing a sleek and sexy look. With the renewed popularity of stretch denim this fall, there’s something for everyone.

The beauty of stretch is that you can wear your jeans a lot tighter without sacrificing comfort. It makes low rise jeans, for example, much easier to wear as they hug your body and don’t feel as rigid – they move with you.

Working with your body

Just because a pair of jeans looks great on your same-size friend doesn’t mean they are right for you. Like with any piece of clothing, you really need to try jeans on to see how they work.

If you have curvy hips and are proud of them, Clarkson suggests a super-low boot-cut jean, which sits well on the hips and shows off your figure. Women who want a little room in the thighs and calves should look at styles that don't hug the body, such as relaxed fit or boy-cut jeans. And for extra room in the seat, try jeans with a low waist, low pockets and a bit of a flare around the ankle.

Singing the blues

With a large variety of washes, choosing the ideal shade for your blue jeans can be tricky. But thanks to this season’s to-dye-for look, your task may be easier. "The must-have colour is simply dark with a lot of texturing," notes Clarkson. Look for inky indigos, which can be dressed down for casual wear and dressed up for a night out. To keep your dark denim looking its best, try washing your jeans inside out in cold water and not using the full dry cycle.

Of course you want your jeans to look good, but remember that they should feel good as well.

Style Tips

Style is the way you put together clothes, not the clothes themselves. There is something to be said for picking clothes you won't get sick of but that feel good.

  • Unless you don't mind getting rid of certain items every season, stay away from overly trendy pieces when shopping for your basic wardrobe.
  • Don't pick everything you see in magazines. Pick what looks and feels better on you. This comes with being honest and true to yourself.
  • Wear what's right for your body type and don't be a slave to fashion
  • No matter how hoochie koochi you get with Gucci, no matter how breathless you become in a Prada dressing room, no matter how cute a pair of Chanel eyelet hotpants are, if a particular style is unflattering on you, you can look, well, tacky!!!
  • Your wardrobe should show your personality, not the personality of the store's salesperson.

Clothes say more about you than you can imagine.

Fashion Tips Buy Clothes to suit Your Shape

Layout your clothes before putting them on and check the proportions. Juggle jackets, scarves & belts to re-arrange the clothes to get the look you want.

  • Thinner fabrics are more slimming.
  • Tops and bottoms of one color will make you look thinner.
  • Wear clothes that fit.
  • Wearing too large clothes will exaggerate your figure not hide it.
  • Avoid belts unless you have a slim waist.
  • Use accessories carefully.

You can make your wardrobe impressive with mix and match jewelry.

Shoes depend less on you body shape than you height. Do not buy clothes on impulse. Plan before you buy a blouse or pants. Be somewhat scientific about shopping, consider your body type, and colors.

Ask your self some questions;

  • Do you have anything you can mix and match with it? Does it match your lifestyle?
  • Will it be comfortable, nonchalant, and easy to wear?
  • Is it machine wash or dry clean only?
  • Will it fit your budget? Is it appropriate?
  • Is it a fad, can it be worn more than one season?
  • Is it of good quality? Quality counts, it is better to have four or five mix and match out fits of quality, than 8 or 10 'steals.'

Think in terms of outfits when you shop, and be practical. When you buy a new dress, be sure you have shoes and other accessories to go with it. Maybe a jacket or scarf to wear over it to give it a different look.

Clothes Styles and Body Shapes

  • High collars shortens necks.
  • Tight tops with short sleeves and breast pocket is detracting from your figure. Shoes with straps shortens your legs. The torso can be shortened or narrowed with seam lines, belts, bows, and collars.
  • A short necklace can shorten your neck.
  • A scarf or belt that hangs down toward the legs will make the legs appear longer. Knitted texture, lace, floras, prints, and plaids can assist in creating an illusion. T
  • hicker vertical lines in plaids lengthens and slims.
  • Wear a larger print where you want people to look and smaller print where you do not want them to look.
  • An all over print can camouflage figure problems, but prints here and there can create a fuller you.
  • Prints around the neck and over the shoulder can make your shoulders appear wider. Just wear prints near the parts of your figure's assets, because they are usually more eye catching than a solid color.
  • When buying pants be sure they fit well. Defects are emphasized in a pair of pants that may go unnoticed in a skirt.

Petite women.

Petite women need to keep clothes in line, slim narrow belts. A slight contrast in colors and fitted lines will flatter you endlessly. Also stay with fabrics that are soft and flowing that fits well. Over powering prints should be avoided.

Tall women.

Tall women can indulge in wide belts, avoid tight clothes and skirts that are to short or to long. Beauty expert Stephanie Faber recommends tall women play down their waist by wearing their blouses over the pants and skirts and avoid tight belts.

Hip heavy triangle woman.

A hip heavy triangle and round full figured women can use clothes with vertical lines to make an up and down illusion. V-necks and skirts with slits up the sides are also good. Clothes with small padded shoulders should be chosen . Too big of pads will make you look like a foot ball player. Wear long tops that go passed your hips. Choose jackets, tailored suits and shirtwaist dresses with straight, classic cuts. Lighter colors on top can be worn, this brings eyes up. Wear dark stockings and avoid patterns. Select vertical, fluid patterns and avoid bulky fabrics. Adopt the just below the knee look in dresses and skirts. Choose accessories close to the same color clothes you are wearing including shoes. This gives your body an unbroken slimmer look. Avoid very wide pinafore skirts. Stay with straight or Aline skirts.

Top heavy woman.

The top heavy body types need to choose long jackets without shoulder pads. Do not wear blouses with fancy details and ruffles. Do not wear clingy fabrics on top, choose darker colors on top. Do not wear tops that are to light. Tops with dolman or raglan sleeves and ones that fit loose and slims down to hug the hips and waist are good. Wear pants or skirts that are pleated to bring the eye down. Choose thin materials like cotton, or cotton jersey. One color dressing will also be thinning. Flat shoes are best unless you are short, then wear heels. If your legs are in good shape shorter hem lengths will draw attention away from your top.

Rectangular type woman.

The rectangular type can accentuate curves by wearing jackets or tops that hug the waist, feminine thick sweaters over skirts or pants. Use patterns in your tops or bottoms to add dimension. Round out the neckline with necklaces, scarves and other accessories, and use shoulder pads.
